Neptune's rings are very thin. They are so thin that they do not block starlight. This makes them very difficult to see from Earth, even with powerful telescopes. Before the Voyager 2 mission in 1989, it was believed that Neptune's outer ring was not complete. Only sections of a ring, called ring arcs were ever seen.
